Benson Shop With A Cop Program

where life long memories are made

Next on the agenda was the shopping trip. The excited children, accompanied by the officers, traveled to Walmart in patrol cars with lights flashing and sirens wailing. A thrilling ride for all the children involved!

Once at Walmart, the officers assisted the children as they selected their favorite toys; Sesame Street Characters, Hot Wheels, Toy Story figures, toy trucks and Barbie’s were among the favorites. The children also had the opportunity to shop for clothes and of course, gifts for family members.

The shopping party returned to the church hall to wrap the myriad gifts they had just purchased. The Future Business Leaders of America were waiting at the church to assist the officers and children in the joyous task of gift wrapping. The Shop With A Cop Program again provided an excellent opportunity this year for law enforcement officers to mentor the carefully selected children who participated. The many positive relationships that were established that morning will be treasured by officers and children alike for life.

Referrals of children for participation in the Shop With A Cop Program were sent in by schools, ministers, officers and other agencies. It is from these referrals that this year’s children were selected. Children who may have had or witnessed a negative experience with law enforcement officers through a parent or sibling's involvement with the justice system were given preference for inclusion in our program. SWAC is run by volunteers and funded by donations from the community.

We understand there are many wonderful organizations that help others during the holidays. We hope you will consider donating to The Shop with a Cop Program and be a part of this positive, life changing experience.

Law enforcement agencies that have participated to date are:
  • Arizona Rangers
  • Alcohol Tobacco Firearm and Explosives
  • Benson Police Department
  • Cochise County Sheriff's Department
  • Department of Public Safety

On December 15, volunteers, assisted by the Boy Scouts, served a hot breakfast to all including Santa. After breakfast, two bicycles were donated by Benson Lawley's Automotive.
